Balancing movements
• Ski too far forward – Test those bindings
• Shuffle feet
• Stepping
• Hopping
• Lift one ski – Start lifting the inside ski toward the end of a turn and lift it earlier till you can ski the whole turn on the outside. Then try it with the outside ski.
• Ski tall, short and in between
• Ski placing hands on toes, knees, hips crossed on top of your head
• Terrain play – Bumps, jumps, lumps, rolls, crud, ice to muck, rails, boxes pipe
• Hold poles out to side – Keep em off the snow and still as can be.
• Cat and mouse
• Drag the outside pole – More balance on outside ski
• One ski skiing – Try it with and without poles, rotating poles around upper body while turning and non ski leg crossed over ski leg
• Backward herringbone – Walk backward down a pitch putting one foot behind the other. Use the sensation of pulling the feet back.
Rotary movements
• Hop turns
• 360s on and off the snow or boxes
• Real short turns – Wedge to dynamic
• One thing to the other or one ski tip to the other – turning into turn vs. moving heal or tail of ski away from its other
• Pivot slips – use a line in the fall line try to keep feet on it while turning back and forth.
• “A”s, “X”s and “V”s – Paying with the shape of the skis to make letters. The As are obvious, the “X”s and “V”s can produce their first spin out or skidded turns. Their reactions are sooo cooool!!
• How many turns can you make from there to there? Can you make more than you did last time?
• Ski a small corridor, now make it smaller and smaller – Keep turning and keep the speed down
• Drag both poles
Edging movements
• Side step up hill – First time lesson to high enders
• Wedge edge deflections – Crab walk
• Flying wedges
• Stem turns
• Skating in fall line
• Slide slips
• Falling leaf
• Diagonal side slips
• 1000 steps – No ski bottoms touching snow, only the sides
• Railroad tracks
• Side slip races – How fast can you go….LOL! How slow can you go without stopping
Pressure control movements
• Jump – Land soft, loud, don’t make any noise
• Jumps or bumps – Take air and handle the landing like a cat, or flow over them with skis on snow
• Pumpers – In powder (ya never know we may get a dump) get the boots and skis to porpoise down under then up to the top
• Take it off/let if off – Get your minds out of the gutter. I’ll explain later.
• Retraction/suction turns
• Turn shape
• Half and Half – No for Starbucks Griz. Make turns half in the crud or bumps. The other half on the groomers.
• Railroad tracks to start turn blended to skidding to finish
Directional movements
• Peddle turns
• Leapers – Leave the snow on edge and land on new edges
• The opposite skate – It’s a good one….I’ll explain on snow if you wanna know
• The “Jolester step over move”…I’ll explain this one too
• Keep pole tips moving all the time
• 2, 4, 2
• Don’t cut the ribbon
• Follow the leader
• Pain in the S
• 45’s – Gotta move a lot to get the top of the and bottom turn in
• Dir and ice – Imagine what you would need to do to stay in balance if these conditions were ahead of you
• Hop to shape
• White pass turns
• Ski slow, real slow, slower-yet-keep skis parallel
• Snow bases of skis uphill
