Movement Analysis - Tips and tricks

Get good and bad out of your vocabulary. Think of movements as a way to accomplish a skier’s desire and find something more desirable for them.

Do the skis tip or twist first?

Balance and stance issues can be the root of all problems. Target the specific reason why they have a balance issue.

Most of the time, hands that are not the problem, its something going on in the feet and legs. (I'm the rare exception to this rule as my hands do crazy things)

Consider equipment or alignment as a cause.

A problem may be the result of something that was done in an earlier turn.

Any movement not in the direction of travel, into the turn or down the hill, is probably not an “efficient” one.

Don’t confuse style with performance.


And.....

If you tell me someone's "in the back seat" during a clinic be prepared to recieve "the look" and quickly come up with more precise feedback. For example:

The skier's hips are behind their feet
The skier is flexing more from the knees than the ankles
At the finish of the turn the skier drops their hips, this settlilng causes an up move into the new turn
Their is little to no ankle flex

Ski good or eat wood

Ski good or eat wood. That’s only one of two mottos for White Grizzly Adventures , a cat skiing operation based in tiny Meadow Creek, British Columbia.  The other motto is considerably less family-friendly. I was a little excited to see the lodge sign... I should say, this was my first time ever cat skiing – it’s quite the splurge but can truly make a ski vacation a vacation – no worries, just lotsa skiing and eating (yes, we had sushi for lunch in the snowcat one day!). Appetizers.  Seriously.  The first question Carole asked when I called to give them my credit card - I’d already filled out about 3 pages of forms online! - was whether I’m an expert skier.  Did I know they ski steep, tight trees most of the time?  Did that sound fun?  Am I fit enough to ski a whole day without getting exhausted and increasing my chance of injury?  Um, yeah!!!  Epitome of a 'tree bomb'.
